Rejoneo

The Rejoneo is an important part of the tradition of bullfighting in Spain, its the bullfighter on horseback. For it is the skill used in the daily training of the Rejoneador, to prepare him for the Bullring.

The horse and rider train with a Carreton, a metal structure on a wheel that simulates a bull. On the “bull’s” back is a piece of cork, in which the rejoneador sticks the banderillas (flags). A brave (and fast) helper moves the carreton about, replicating a real bull as much as possible–for live Spanish bulls are dangerous. The rejoneador learns how to not only fight the bull, but also to direct the bull to protect his horse. The job is extreme for the horse, for it requires total trust and a skillful rider in complete control.

The horse and the rejoneador are an amazing team that seems to be one. It is an incredible expression of an ancient Spanish custom, and an important part of the tradition of bullfighting in Spain.
